Supermarket shoppers in Evesham are being encouraged to help those in need this Christmas.

Staff at Morrisons, just off Davies Road, have put up a 'Giving Tree' to give customers the chance to donated to a local charity.

Shoppers can take a £1, £2, or £5 bauble from the tree to make a donation.

Evesham Journal: All the money raised will go to Caring Hands in the ValeAll the money raised will go to Caring Hands in the Vale

All the money raised will go to Caring Hands in the Vale, a charity which supports people on low income, with severe debt, single parent families, ex-offenders and the homeless.

The charity distributes food parcels, toiletries, bedding, clothing and blankets, free of charge to those who need them.

Teresa Cerra is the local Morrisons Community Champion and is very happy to support Caring Hands.

She said: "It is an important event as its helping a very worthy charity.

"For the past few years myself and Theresa Tydeman (fellow Community Champion) have gone to help distribute lunches a week before Christmas.

"It's an amazing place with fantastic people and volunteers"

A spokeswoman of the charity said: "We are absolutely delighted that Morrisons Evesham has chosen Caring Hands in the Vale to be the recipient of donations from the Giving Tree.

"Caring Hands in the Vale has been operating a food bank in Evesham for over eighteen years, along with four other resource banks, a community pantry and drop-in meals.

"During the Festive period we also provide Christmas Hampers and a Christmas Day Meal.  Referrals to the food bank have increased dramatically in the last few weeks, so donations from the Giving Tree will help us to support this increased need.

"Huge thanks to Morrisons for their continued support."

Shoppers will be able to donate until December 24th.
