A BAR worker ended up with his car "impaled" on a traffic light pole following a crash in Worcester.

Jon Cooke, aged 20, of Norfolk Close, Dines Green, plead guilty before Worcester Magistrates Court on Friday to driving while above the legal alcohol limit.

Lesley Ashton, prosecuting, said Cooke, who works at Tramps nightclub in Worcester, crashed in to a set of traffic lights on New Road at around 3.26am on November 4.

She said: "When police arrived Cooke was standing next to the car surrounded by debris. His car was substantially damaged and was impaled on the traffic lights.

"He said he hadn't been driving fast and tests found he had 91mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath — the legal limit being 35mcg.

"He says he made a stupid mistake by getting behind the wheel."

Chris Hilton, defending, said: "He has no previous convictions. He's very ashamed of his actions. He's been left shaken up by this and doesn't drink any more. He had been for a meeting at work and had a few drinks with colleagues. He went to get some fast food but there was an incident, not involving him, in the restaurant, so he left and ate his food in his car which was parked nearby. He had intended to collect it the next day but instead decided to drive home. He stayed with the vehicle waiting for police and didn't try to leave. He didn't want to avoid his responsibilities."

Magistrates fined Cooke £80 and ordered him to pay costs of £105, charges of £150, a victim surcharge of £20 and disqualified him from driving for two years.
