A HONEYBOURNE resident said the village railways station is getting so overcrowded with cars that many commuters are now parking among residential areas, causing villagers problems.

Trevor Askew says the station is getting so busy that an unadopted road for houses in Stephenson Way, which were built in 2000, is being used as an impromptu station car park.

"Cars are double parked along the access road and within the development. I can only see this is going to get worse after recent announcements that London Midland are going to add more trains to the timetable," he said adding that at 6.55am on Thursday last week there were only two car parking spaces left.

He also said that it appeared some cars were left for days on end.

"There were intermittent spells of cars parking on the development due to insufficient station parking, however this has become a regular occurrence since around the time of the ceramic poppies display at the Tower of London. There was some respite while Bidford bridge was closed, but currently particularly Wednesdays and Thursdays result in cars spilling out.

"Roads are not adopted. This is largely due to Network Rail not completing legals on land at the entrance to the development which they have rights over. Thus roads remain the responsibility of Taylor Wimpey and are in private ownership and should certainly not be used for rail overspill parking."

Mr Askew added that all residents pay a management company to maintain all open spaces. In the past cars have actually parked on the large open space.

He said on one occasion recently as he was attempting to exit the car park he was confronted by two vehicles approaching and reversing out was difficult and dangerous because of cars being parked on the rail access road and the new developments' roads.

"Network Rail are not seeming to take any interest in addressing the problems. Due to huge amounts of houses being built in the vicinity the number of cars using the station will undoubtedly increase. There is a desperate need for more car parking spaces," he added.

A spokesman for Great Western Railway said: "GWR recognises there is huge potential for further growth at Honeybourne Station and we share aspirations to further improve the facilities on offer. We have recently completed the extension of Kingham Station car park, providing an extra 120 spaces, and have submitted bids for additional parking at Charlbury and Hanborough, and new ticket machines will be installed at Evesham and Moreton. To maximise the benefits of electrification and the new train fleet, we continue to explore options for further improvement works."
