MEMBERS of Evesham Rambling Club temporarily put their rucksacks and boots to one side to head out bridge building.

A large truck arrived in a quiet corner of the village of Besford, near Pershore, loaded with huge sections of timber and all the components and tools necessary to replace an existing footbridge, which had become impassable and dilapidated.

The stalwart footpath maintenance team of Geoff Smith, Geoff Thould, Roy Pritchard, Pat Morcombe and led by Alan Saunders were assisted by contractors for Worcestershire County Council.

Glyn Hayter, of Evesham Rambling Club, said: "The team manually hauled the components for the hefty 10-foot long replacement bridge across a field, before installing it over a deep water-filled ditch, putting in a metal gate to replace a very chewed wooden one and making the whole thing safe."

Evesham Rambling Club is assisting the Countryside Service with this special voluntary work to keep Rights of Way open for walkers to enjoy. The team hope to undertake footpath work in different parts of south Worcestershire and plan to complete six such projects this year.

The club offers a varied programme of day and half day walks throughout the year and is always pleased to welcome guest walkers and new members. Details can be found at eveshamramblingclub.org.uk.
