AN Ofsted rated good middle school in Evesham is set to undergo an £800,000 refurbishment, with two new science laboratories planned.

Worcestershire County Council has identified that Blackminster Middle School needs an extensive refurbishment to improve facilities for all pupils.

Over the coming years, the school will undergo three phases of work, the first of these beginning in the summer.

As well as the two new labs in the main block, the old science building will be remodelled to create a state of the art resistant materials teaching space, a food technology area, a graphics area and an upgraded art and textiles area.

Lorna Button, headteacher at the school said: "We are delighted that the school is getting a much needed refurbishment and that Worcestershire County Council is backing middle schools in this way.

"We're excited to have some state of the art facilities and looking forward to welcoming new students in September who will have the benefit of the new specialist teaching areas."

Councillor Marcus Hart, cabinet member with responsibility for education and skills said: "One of Worcestershire County Council's priorities is to improve outcomes for children and young people.

"Ensuring our schools provide high quality facilities is an important aspect of this and we're really looking forward to supporting Blackminster Middle School undergo this refurbishment."

As well as new education facilities, the school's playground will be resurfaced and new security gates will also be installed.

The bulk of the work will happen over the summer holidays but will extend into the autumn term. The school will minimise any disruption to learning.
