AN Evesham man his hit out at “ridiculous” road closures around the town last week.

Evesham resident Mervyn Collins said: “there was no explanation for the closures.”

Mr Collins said: “I just find it extraordinary.”

Evesham High Street was closed last Thursday and Mr Collins said Cheltenham Road, at the football club had a sign saying ‘access only’.

He drove around Twyford roundabout at Greenhill, where there was also a ‘road ahead closed, access only’ sign.

At the Chadbury roundabout, the Worcester Road entrance into Evesham, there was a sign and a large diversion arrow pointing towards Worcester.

Mr Collins said: “Every entrance into Evesham was closed apparently.

“There was a water main burst near the Railway Hotel, but I just can’t understand why they would have to close all these roads.”

“Traffic on Evesham roads is bad enough as it is without closing all these roads.”

Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways at Worcestershire County Council, Councillor Alan Amos, said: “High Street, Evesham was closed last Thursday (September 27) due to a burst water main.

“Severn Trent Water required the road closure in order to complete the emergency work.

“This affected the surrounding roads including Cheltenham Road, Worcester Road and Green Hill.”

On Friday, September 28, Mr Collins said Badsey Road was also closed with a sign saying ‘no through road.’

He said there were no diversions. He said this was apparently was due to road resurfacing but it had caused problems for people in the area, with one woman being unable to get out of her driveway due to the works.
