Olympic silver medallist, Frances Houghton, visited the children of St Richard’s C of E First School, as part of Aldi’s partnership with Team GB to help children to learn about the benefits of fresh and healthy food following Aldi’s recent store opening in Evesham.

Team GB rower, Frances Houghton, delivered an inspirational assembly addressing the benefits of eating healthy food and exercising. Frances talked to the pupils about her experience of the Olympics and took them through her challenging training regime as an Olympian. The children of St Richard’s C of E First School also got the chance to hold Frances’ impressive silver medal.

The Olympian presented a donation of fresh fruit and snacks to the school, courtesy of the new Aldi store in Sinclair Retail Park. This school visit comes as part of Aldi’s initiative, Get Set to Eat Fresh, which hopes to inspire 1.2 million school children aged 5-14, to learn more about the benefits of cooking fresh, healthy food with their families.

Aldi Store Manager, Alan Ridley, said: “Since opening the Evesham store earlier this month, we’ve had a really successful couple of weeks. It’s been great to meet more of our new customers and share our everyday amazing products with them. I’m also thrilled that we’ve been able to support a local primary school through our partnership with Team GB.”

Team GB star, Frances Houghton, added: “I’ve had a fantastic time with the children, they were an absolute delight. It was great to talk to them about the importance of eating healthily and how it can be fun to prepare your own meals! Hopefully I’ve also managed to inspire the pupils to keep active and try different sports.”

In addition to supporting St Richard’s C of E First School, the new Aldi store is now donating surplus food directly to Roundabout Evesham, which supports the local community by recycling household furniture to those in need and Evesham Adventure Playground, which supports families by creating an environment which challenges and inspires the mind and body.

The new partnership follows on from a successful trial between the supermarket and community engagement platform, Neighbourly. Aldi aims to pair up all stores across the UK with local good causes to collect surplus food up to five days a week.

Any charities in Evesham that would like to partner up with the new Aldi Sinclair Retail Park store should email aldi@neighbourly.com.
