A MAN has been seriously injured after being hit by a car on a main road.
The man, aged in his 50s, has sustained injuries to his chest and pelvis following the collision in Kay Street, Halliwell, near the junction with Blackburn Road.
The man has been taken to Salford Royal Hospital by ambulance.
An air ambulance was also called to the scene, and landed near to the Halliwell Health Centre.
Police were also scrambled to the scene. About three police officers remain at the site.
A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said: "We were called at about 9.50am to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian.
"We sent an air ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and one of our consultant paramedics.
"We treated a man in his 50s for injuries to his chest and pelvic area.
"We have taken him by land ambulance to hospital with serious injuries."
NWAS remained at the scene for about one hour.
Kay Street (A666) has been closed southbound between Waterloo Street and Turton Street, and traffic is currently being diverted away from the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing paramedics entering Halliwell Health Centre before a patient was transferred to the air ambulance, although another resident said: “It looks like there has been a serious crash next to the Shell garage."
Other witnesses reported seeing "seven or eight police cars".
One motorist said Blackburn Road had been closed before the B&Q store, with traffic diverted down Waterloo Street.
She said: "Police have shut everything off. They won't let anyone past B&Q at all."
