Support for a new trail at a west Dorset primary school in memory of a little boy who died of cancer continues to grow.

The Bridport News featured an article on Branden’s Trail Project (February 20) which aims to restore play equipment at Bridport Primary School installed in memory of Branden Wayland who was diagnosed with cancer when he was just three-years-old. He died two years later.

He attended the school and next to the early years classroom where he was taught, is an area now largely derelict with a sign that reads ‘Branden’s Trail’.

The project is co-ordinated by Bridport Young Person’s Action trust (BYPAT), which was contacted by local author Colin Ward - one of the judges for the BBC’s ‘500 words’ writing competition’ - who has offered to work with the school and, through creative writing, produce a publication, “not just to raise money, but to appropriately mark the project and celebrate it”.

The article also prompted Bridport Community Shed’s Ed Brand to offer help making any wooden structures that will be needed.

Members of Bridport Gardening Club, together with The Living Tree’s David Craner, have inspected the site and offered to help all they can.

Margaret Genender, chairman of Bridport Gardening Club, said: “It is a great project for the community to be involved in and would be an asset to so many.”

With the help of professional consultant Phil Gamble, club member Sarah Herring is drawing up draft designs for the children to view. The final decision of what’s included in Branden’s Trail will be up to them.

The ‘Bridport Rights Respecting project’ seeks to ensure that this little boy is once again remembered and the revitalisation of his memorial a legacy to other young children.

A sensory garden and therapy trail are planned, opened to all, but designed to also be a calm refuge for children needing additional support.

Fundraising towards the projected budget of £3,000 has been boosted by a donation of £300 from the Brit Valley Rotary Club. This, together with contribution from Bridport Lions Club, the Rotary Club of Bridport, BYPAT and an anonymous donation of £100, means they are almost half-way there.

Fundraising events planned by supporters have been put on hold, but if you would like to donate, email a.c.woodgate@btinternet.com or call 01308 423767.
