RESIDENTS at a rest home in Hook have posted a heartwarming video of their rendition of an iconic Vera Lynn song.

Staff and residents at Heatherside Rest Home, in Nately Scures, took part in the rendition of the wartime singer's quintessential song 'We'll Meet Again'.

It comes after visiting has been stopped at care homes across the country because of the coronavirus outbreak.

And amidst all the parallels drawn by government ministers between this pandemic and the Second World War, staff at the home decided to host a singalong to one of the era's most famous and iconic songs.

According to manager Steve Morton, the idea came to enable families to be able to see their relatives are still in good spirits.

"What we are trying to do is, because we have not had visitors for three weeks, is caring for the family outside the home as well as caring for the residents that live with us.

"The residents are not getting time with the family members and they are not getting time with the residents. It is trying to keep up that communication.

"It is a bit of reassurance and fun, we all had fun doing it."

Steve added that the song was iconic and "very British".

"It is a lovely song," he told the Gazette. "The song does have a lot of meaning to everyone who had connections with the war. It is iconic and very British, it makes everyone cheer up."

He also wanted to thank all of his staff for their work during this difficult time, as well as families and the community for standing by their side.

According to Steve, one of his staff went to Tesco to collect some supplies, where they were fastracked through the checkouts and applauded.

"We are all doing the job that we love. It is not a job you could do unless you did love it. It just makes it more special."
