Students in Lancashire concerned about their results following the cancellation of GCSE, AS and A-Level examinations are being reassured they will receive final grades based on teacher assessments.

In a statement from Lancashire County Council, cabinet member for children, young people and schools, County Cllr Phillippa Williamson said students would receive a grade for their subjects based on classwork, completed coursework, mock examinations and other internal assessments.

She said: "Following the recent guidance from Ofqual, our Lancashire schools and colleges will be working hard to ensure that GCSE, AS and A-Level students receive an accurate assessment of the grades they were expected to achieve, following the cancellation of formal exams this year.

"During this extraordinary time, results will be assessed using classwork, coursework, mocks and other internal assessments, to assess what grade it is believed that students would have got, if they had sat a formal exam."

Cllr Williamson also stated that teachers would be sending assessments to the exam regulators by the end of May, leaving them on track to provide students with final grades in the months following.

She added: "Our teachers have until the end of May to send to the regulator what they believe each student was on track to receive, and these assessments will be used to decide on the final grade.

"Students will also be given the chance to sit exams at the earliest opportunity in the new academic year.

"If a student chooses to do this, both grades will stand.

"We know how important these results are for our students, their future and chosen careers.

"In these difficult and unprecedented times, I know that the teacher assessments will be scrupulously fair and objective."
