AN iconic Evesham landmark is going to be turned blue in support of NHS workers on the frontline of the battle against the coronavirus.

Every Thursday at 8pm Evesham Bell Tower will be bathed in blue light in support of the Clap for Our Carers campaign.

The campaign brings people together from the safety of their doorsteps or gardens to applaud those NHS and healthcare workers at the forefront of tackling the pandemic.

The Bell Tower will also be turned red, white and blue on VE Day to mark the 75th anniversary of the allied victory in Europe during the Second World War and in remembrance of all those who lost their lives during the conflict.

The idea has been made possible thanks to the Enlighten Project, which was launched in 2018 and created a trail of lighting and projection projects around various locations in Evesham to highlight its heritage.

The project was led by Wychavon District Council in partnership with Evesham Town Council, The Almonry Museum, St Lawrence’s Church, All Saints Church, The Bell Tower, Abbey Gardens and various other interested groups such as Evesham Civic Society and The De Montfort Society.

Cllr Martin King and Cllr Emma Stokes, who represent Bengeworth Ward on Wychavon District Council, said: “The Bell Tower is such an iconic landmark that turning the lighting blue will be a fitting tribute to our brave NHS heroes and a very visible sign that the people of Evesham and the surrounding area are right behind them.”

Mark Goodge, Mayor of Evesham, said: "I'm really pleased that we've been able to arrange this on behalf of the residents of Evesham. Many people have been asking for the Bell Tower lights to be blue in support of the NHS, and this will be a visible symbol of the fact that we're all playing our part in helping to defeat the virus."

Rev Andrew Spurr, Vicar of Evesham, said: "The wellspring of feeling for our NHS expresses what is the best and most essential about our national character.

"I am delighted that our bell tower will be used to praise a service that is the envy of the world."
