CANDLES will be lit for a ‘beautiful’ nine year old who has died after a battle with cancer.

Friends of Lily May Filmer’s family have organised an online candle vigil in memory of the brave nine year old who sadly lost her fight against acute lymphoblastic leukaemia last Saturday.

The organisers are asking people across the district to simply light a candle at home for the Drakes Broughton girl, and post a photograph or video with the hashtags #lightsforlily and #lilysfreedomfight.

The candles will be lit on Saturday September 12 at 7pm.

Close friend of Lily’s family Sarah Mellish said: “The outpouring of genuine grief in our community goes some way in helping Lily’s family as they face every parent’s nightmare.”

“Lily was a beautiful little girl full of life who loved all things purple and butterflies.

“Lighting candles is a symbol of peace and her parents thought it a fitting way for people to be able to pay their respects.”

In the post on Facebook, that included heart and butterfly emojis, the family wrote on Sunday: “I don’t really know how to say this but Lily passed away, with all her brothers and sisters around her.

“Our lives will never be the same without that beautiful smile and that sassy attitude.

“Fly high my little angel.”

Last month we reported that Lily had been moved to Acorns Children’s Hospice for end-of-life care after initially returning to hospital from the hospice when she awoke from a coma.
