STEPS leading up to one of the main pedestrian routes across the Severn are being closed from next week.

Renovation work is being carried out on Sabrina Bridge and the steps leading up to it will be closed from September 21.

As a result, road closures will be in place while engineers remove the span of the existing bridge before the installation of a new structure in the winter.

The bridge will remain fully open for all users until it is removed in mid-October.

Henwick Road reopens today (September 18) while traffic lights will be in place in Hylton Road from Monday.

According to Worcestershire County Council, the work is being carried out now as it was "vital" to get it done before the winter months.

Due to other priority infrastructure works taking place and restrictions on the availability and supply of materials such as steel during lockdown, this is the first opportunity the council has had to begin the work.

It is programmed for this to occur from mid-October for a period of up to 6 weeks.

Two cranes will be located in Hylton Road, while the main crane will be in Grandstand Road. Due to the size, weight and reach of the crane located in Grandstand Road, it will mean this road is fully closed during the operation.

Part of the cranes located in Hylton Road will need to be positioned on the road itself, which is why a lane will be closed during the works.

The new bridge deck is a composite material which has been specifically chosen as it performs much better in wintery conditions than the current wooden slats.

The bridge will need to be closed during the works as contractors remove the old main span. It is programmed for this to occur from mid-October for a period of up to 6 weeks.
