A WORCESTER music teacher has won over viewers in a popular baking contest.

Worcester Sixth Form College music teacher Rowan Williams, aged 55, from Pershore, is competing in the The Great British Bake Off.

The popular baking competition returned to the TV screen on Tuesday (September 22).

Rowan made a magic flute Battenburg with a marzipan midnight sky for the first challenge, which Paul Hollywood said was “quite neat.” However, some viewers were left horrified after Rowan looked to the microwave to rescue his Battenberg cake which wasn’t cooked properly in the centre.

One person said: “Cannot believe Rowan MICROWAVED A CAKE ON BAKE OFF!”

Another replied: “Well, why would they include a microwave if it wasn’t supposed to be used, eh?”

For the technical challenge, he made a pineapple upside down cake. He invented a new word ‘waftage,’ for the action of wafting cakes to cool them.

He then made a sponge in the shape of Marie Antoinette for the show stopper - she had rice paper hair and was a chocolate cake with cherries.

Prue Leith said it was “very tasty.”

Here’s what some viewers thought:

The Clientele, an indie pop band, shared on Twitter: “When we were 16/17 we had one of those teachers you never forget. He let us write music, which A level music students then played on flute or cello.

"It was an inspiration, and in the space he so generously gave us we gradually refined our sound.

"So it was instantly wonderful to see him on Bake Off yesterday, making a sponge cake head of Marie Antoinette. Go Rowan!”

Another person said: “Loving Rowan.”

One former student of his said on Twitter: “Not to flex, but Rowan the baker of the most beautiful Marie Antoinette cake I’ve ever seen. Taught me music A level for the last 2 years and I am SO PROUD.”

Another viewer said: “ROWAN’S MAKING A ‘LET THEM EAT CAKE’ CAKE. I don’t think I’ve ever had a favourite this strong this early.”

Another fan said: “Rowan’s description of his Magic Flute Battenberg is everything I needed this evening.”

One fan said: “Rowan is already my favourite.”
