COLWALL Cricket Club got to live the cricket-lover’s dream, winning a thrilling Lord’s final and being given a hero’s welcome upon their return.

Club chairman Kim Berry spoke of his pride as the team won its first ever Cricketer Village Cup on September 19.

He said: “It was a fabulous day, made better when we won.

“Getting to the final like this will bring more and more people into the ground and is great for the community.

“It is amazing considering back in July we weren’t sure we would play any cricket at all.”

For the final, in which Colwall were victorious over Redborn CC, the team was allowed to bring a maximum of 15 people, being given the ultimate cricket-lover’s dream, given free reign of Lord’s and its facilities for the day.

Mr Berry added: “I went as chair and sort of team manager/coach. Lord’s really did us proud and we were given open access to the whole ground.

“We trained in the away dressing room rather than the home one, but we could go to the museum and they opened the library to us.

“We had lunch in the longroom and the staff were magnificent.”

Colwall were winners in the final, beating Redborn by six runs, registering the seventh highest score in Village Cup Final history.

Mr Berry praised Colwall captain James Wagstaff for his leadership in masterminding the team’s victory.

He said: “James did a wonderful job and really galvanised the team.

“The chips were down at one stage but it came good and that is credit to James for his captaincy.”

Upon their return to Colwall, the team was given a heroes welcome, with a standing ovation greeting them.

Mr Berry added the win would be inspirational to crickets at the club, saying they would take the cup to nearby schools and groups when they could.
