Atherton Colls came up short at Witton Albion as Daisy Hill went down at Ashton Town on a wet weekend for our non-league sides.

All that and more in our non-league round-up below.

DISALLOWED GOAL DENIES COLLS

Following a strong opening to the season, Atherton Colls were disappointed not to carry on their winning form as they tasted a narrow away defeat 2-1 against Witton.

Described as a ‘game of two halves’ by manager Brad Cooke, a poor first half display saw Colls 2-0 down at the break, with Dylan Glass pulling one back in the second half.

Despite a spirited performance after half time, the visitors were unable to secure a point with captain Danny Lafferty seeing a last-gasp equaliser frustratingly chalked out for offside.

Cooke said: “It was a game of two halves. First half it was men against boys but second half I thought we came out and really gave it a go.

“I changed the shape in the first half so I’m happy to take the blame for the first half performance, I thought we were much better after the changes.

“We were knocking on the door in the second half. They’re a very good side and we’ve taken them right down to the wire and had a goal disallowed. It shows we’re not a million miles off. I’m frustrated, not so much with the result but certainly with the first half performance.”

Colls are on the road at Stafford Rangers tonight.

OWENS AT DOUBLE FOR BORO

An Andy Owens brace was enough to see Radcliffe past Gainsborough Trinity with a 2-1 victory at a rainy Neuven Stadium.

Both sides were down to 10 either side of half time as Raheem Hanley and Tyler Hamilton saw red.

The game saw former Wanderers midfielder Neil Danns in action for Radcliffe.

Boss Lee Fowler said: “The last couple of games I’ve really been impressed with the lads.

“They’ve got to keep going now and the thing with good teams is they have to back it up, we can’t be a yo-yo team and as we’ve seen in this league there’s not much in it.”

Fowler’s side are at home to Whitby Town tonight.

DAISY BOSS LOOKS ON BRIGHT SIDE

Daisy Hill boss Brian Hart says there were plenty of positives to take out of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Ashton Town.

The Cutters looked like they were good for a point after Connor Hughes has cancelled out Rustam Stepans opener for the hosts in the North West Counties League First Division North clash.

But two goals in the final seven minutes from Thomas Hewlett and Carl Lownsbrough ensured victory for the home side.

“I was quite pleased with the way we played, and the way we started in conditions that were tough for both teams,” said Hart.

“There were spells in the first half where it was the best we had played for a while, and in the second half we did what we needed to do, and got back into the game.

“We missed a few chances when we were on top and that’s what probably cost us in the end, as we then just got caught with the two late goals.

“I feel the scoreline flatters then a bit, because up to their second goal we were on top.

“We had a few heavy legs out there with a couple of players coming back from injury, but overall I thought we played well.

“I felt we were the stronger team over 90 minutes, but we’ve just got to be a bit more clinical.

“It’s frustrating when you have worked hard and created chances, but I am pleased with the performance“.

LR WASHED OUT

Atherton LR’s game at home to St Helens Town was called off after 50 minutes due to a waterlogged pitch with the visitors leading 2-1.

Adam Lawrence had pulled a goal back for LR after first-half strikes from Joel Douglas and Colyfa Kamara for the visitors and the match will now be rescheduled.
