A sculpture in Pershore’s Abbey Park is set to be removed as it poses a danger to the public.
The sculpture, which was created by Tom Harvey in 2007, is made out of a Beech Tree that had to be felled due to disease.
The timber has now decayed to the extent it can’t be preserved and sections are falling away.
Wychavon says it has cleaned the sculpture and made every effort to preserve it every year but it is no longer practical to retain it. If the tree had been an oak it would have been expected to last longer, but as it is a beech it has done well to stand for 13 years.
The sculpture has been fenced off until the council can carry out removal works, a date has not yet been set.
At this stage there is no plan to replace the sculpture with a piece of art but to plant trees in the vicinity for future generations to enjoy.
Cllr Emma Stokes, Executive Board Member for Environment and Street Scene on Wychavon District Council, said: “The sculpture has become a well known staple in Abbey Park and has been much-loved by all over the years. It is a real shame it has to be removed but officers at Wychavon have done everything in their power to maintain it. The safety of our residents is of the utmost importance and that is why and the decision has been made to remove the sculpture”.
