LATE on Friday night reports emerged the government is now considering a U-turn with a new national lockdown introduced next week.

There are reported to be further meetings this afternoon (Saturday), with potentially the new "stay at home" message announced on Monday during a press conference set to be given by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, national press has reported.

The lockdown could be introduced next Wednesday, November 4, and remain in place until December 1, The Times has said.

But the national lockdown could be different from the one earlier this year as although pubs, bars and restaurants, gyms, leisure centres and other non-essential businesses would close, schools, colleges and universities would remain open.

The government looks set to act as scientists warned the country was on course for a much higher death toll than during the first wave, with deaths reaching thousands a day.

After the news broke overnight, readers took to social media to have their say.

Paul Harding said: "Simple rules not followed. When the rule breakers complain about a lockdown, they only have themselves to blame."

Natalie Keatley said: "Needs to happen.

"We need cases and deaths down dramatically. We all wanna start travelling again, being able to see people again, begin our dreams, actually do things and live our lives.

"We need to really tackle this pandemic and start getting rid of it."

Jay Kay said: "This is what happens when the idiots out there can’t be arsed to socially distance nor wear a face mask. This is on them."

Brodie Adams called for the Prime Minister to resign adding: "Boris you've done enough damage as it is."

Dean Hawker said: "We have to live with this virus, it’s not going away, we cannot destroy the economy because without an economy there will be no NHS to come back to."

Jodie Brookes wrote: "We can't cope with another lockdown. People who work in hospitality and citizens who have mental health, gonna hit us all rock bottom again."

Leah Smith added: "I think the pub curfew hasn’t helped as when pubs close they go to people's houses. Like others said the businesses will suffer badly.

"I get it’s to try to help as hospitals are getting overrun but without us working no money will go into the NHS neither."
