Second World War tank veteran Harold Wilson marked Remembrance Day yesterday morning with a minute's silence and laying of a wreath at his home in Pershore.

Harold, who will turn 100 in February, was joined by some 20 wellwishers as he paid tribute to fallen comrades with a short ceremony in the garden of Roland Rutter Court.

Fellow residents and members of the Pershore branch of the Royal British Legion turned out to support Harold who fought in the Fife and Forfars Yeomanry and took part in the D-Day landings.

Leading the short ceremony and reciting the Ode was Court resident and Legion member Steve Grainger, who travelled to Normandy with Harold two years' ago. Assisting Harold was Naval veteran Maggie Brown (pictured). "We are so pleased that despite the Lockdown, Harold has been able to continue his annual remembrance of lost friends with this short service in the garden of his home," she said.

"Marking anniversaries such as Remembrance is something that is of great importance for our residents, many of whom lived through the war. Being able to hold this ceremony has been wonderful for everyone's morale." added Steve.

"I am proud to have had opportunity once again to wear my medals this morning and venture outside to remember old comrades," said Harold. "Thanks to all my fellow residents at Roland Rutter for coming outside to support me and to Pershore Royal British Legion for making it happen. Now we look forward to my 100th birthday celebrations next year."
