PLANS to redesign Evesham town centre are on the table as part of efforts to tackle traffic problems.

The action plan is being drawn up following a virtual transport summit called by Wychavon District Council in response to concerns raised by residents and businesses.

Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston, Worcestershire County Council, Wychavon District Council and Evesham Town Council collaborated with Highways England, Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership and Midlands Connect.

A statement said “several potential projects will now be developed” as a result.

It read: “These include short-term options such as junction improvements, improved signage, road reconfiguration around the town and a new parking strategy.

“Longer-term there is an option to look at more ambitious remodelling linked to the future vision for Evesham in terms of town centre redesign, housing, and economic growth.

“Active travel will be a key part of the plan and encouraging people to walk and cycle more. Better connection of bus and rail services will also be looked at.

“The rollout of 5G to support home working and changing working patterns will also be important.”

Councillor Bradley Thomas, leader of Wychavon District Council, said: “We know congestion and transport issues are a major concern for residents and businesses in Evesham that’s why we called this summit.

“There were lots of positive ideas and discussions and I am grateful to our partners for their support. The challenge now is for all of us to take those ideas and turn them into actions. There are no quick wins, solutions will take time, but I am confident we can make a difference.”

Nigel Huddleston added: “I was very pleased to open the virtual transport summit and my thanks go out to all at Wychavon District Council for organising the event.

“Many different organisations came together in a productive dialogue to discuss ways in which we can help improve the traffic problem in Evesham.

“I very much look forward to examining the proposed projects as they are developed.”
