CHRISTMAS has come early for an independent cinema in Evesham with shows already sold out ahead of reopening in December.

The Regal on Port Street, Evesham, has defied the doom in its industry by putting on a variety of ideas including private hire, live pantomime shows, members’ choice nights, cabaret and comedy.

It puts the bijou outfit one step ahead of giants such as Cineworld and Picture which have closed sites with the loss of 45,000 jobs in the UK and United States, while Odeon has shut 25 per cent of its sites other than at weekends.

The Regal’s managing director Ian Wiper said: “UK cinemas are suffering with many closures including Cineworld and sadly, many small independents.

“We achieved the impossible with sold-out shows over half-term and we have a fabulous line up of films and events for December when we reopen.

“This is all thanks to our fantastic team and supporters who have rallied around to keep us going. We are aiming for our best Christmas ever.”

The Regal is a grade-two listed building which was reopened after two years of major restoration work in 2012. It originally opened in October 1932.

Its ideas are now attracting interest across the UK and internationally with its innovative survival strategy and safe cinema initiatives.

Assistant operations manager Eva Moeskops said: “We are happy to share our experiences with any cinema or arts organisation. We are all in this together.”
