EVESHAM and the surrounding area remains on alert with yellow warnings for snow and ice continuing into New Year’s Eve and river levels still high.

Wyre Piddle and Pershore appear to have been spared the worst of the predicted consequences of the River Avon flooding, while anticipated snowfall did not hit the area for long despite having a dramatic impact on roads and services across the rest of Worcestershire.

However, more snow is forecast and with standing water on roads from melted snow and the region’s river levels still teetering on the limits, the Met Office has warned of the impact of snow set to through the night on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

The warning read: "Snow arriving from the north later Wednesday, moving south through Thursday morning may lead to some travel disruption.

"Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services."

The Flood Warning Information Service downgraded parts of Evesham, Wyre Piddle and Pershore from warnings, where action is required, to alerts, where the public should "be prepared".

Its statement read: "River levels are falling slowly at the Evesham and Bredon river gauges despite recent heavy rainfall.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is expected to continue. Flooding is affecting low lying land and roads adjacent the River Avon from Abbotts Salford to Tewkesbury.

"Other locations that may be affected include Offenham, Evesham, Twyning & the Eckington Road. Mill Bank Road from Jubilee Bridge to Fladbury is impacted.

"The Evesham gauge peaked at 2.44m at 7am Monday (December 28). Bredon gauge peaked at 2.99m at 6.45pm Monday.

"No significant rainfall is expected over the next few days but there is a risk of some wintry showers.

"We expect river levels to remain high for the next few days. We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded."

The latest from Worcestershire Highways was that Jubilee Bridge has been reopened after flooding but that Eckington Bridge remained closed.
