A 21-year-old man denies stealing an Audi from the owner's drive but did film and take photos of it because it was a 'nice car'.

Mohammed Awais has pleaded not guilty to the theft of the Audi RS5 Quattro from the driveway in Stourport as his trial got underway at Worcester Crown Court yesterday.

Awais of Wardend Road, Birmingham stands accused of stealing the car in the early hours of May 4, 2019.

The case was opened to a jury by Amiee Parkes, prosecuting, who said the Audi was locked and the car's owner had the keys in his pocket when it was taken. The only spare key was locked in a safe, she said.

The car's owner awoke and found the car was no longer on his drive and discovered broken glass on his driveway.

"It's at that point he realised his car had been stolen" said Miss Parkes. The Audi triggered three automatic numberplate recognition cameras and was said by the prosecution to be travelling 'in convoy with the defendant's own vehicle'. Awais was arrested and his iPhone was seized by police. "Contained on it was a number of photographs of the stolen vehicle and two videos featuring the car" said Miss Parkes.

Awais confirmed the phone was his but answered no comment to further questions when interviewed by police on July 19, 2019. He later accepted he had taken the videos of the car on his mobile phone.

"He did so because it was a nice car" said Miss Parkes.

The trial continues.
