A FAMILY have paid tribute to a former Worcester News editor who has died aged 69.
Andrew Martin, who was the editor of the Evening News in the 1990s - now known as Worcester News, died suddenly on Thursday, February 4.
Andrew's son Adam, said: "Dad and mum had been a couple for over 50 years and had recently celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
"The family moved to North Wales 19 years ago.
"Dad was kind, generous to a fault, had a great sense of humour and very fair minded to everybody and he loved the work he did.
"He was fortunate to love his job. hence the reason he did it for so many years.
"He adored his rugby and cricket and played at a reasonable level for a number of years."
Andrew, who was living in Conwy Valley at the time of his death, started his newspaper career in 1968.
His first job had been in printing. He did this for six months before securing a job as junior reporter on The Banbury Advertiser.
After a couple of years, he got a reporting job on the Banbury Guardian as a sports reporter.
He worked for Radio Oxford reporting on the local football team Banbury United.
He then moved to Malvern where he was made editor of the Malvern Gazette before becoming editor of the Evesham Journal and then, the Worcester Evening News.
Veteran Worcester News reporter Mike Pryce said: "He was great at the job and a very good cricketer."
Years later he held a position as a sub editor at the Birmingham Post.
Andrew took over from Steve Rogers as editor of the coastal titles, including the Rhyl Journal, in 2012. He had been with the company, then NWN Media and now Newsquest, for six years.
During that period, he also edited the Denbighshire Free Press.
Andrew died suddenly on February 4 at 12.15am.
He leaves behind his wife Sue, 68, grown up children Melissa, Adam and Nicholas and four grandchildren.
Adam added: "Dad could often be found helping out with the breakfasts at the weekend. He could turn his hand to most things was always ready for for a chat with the guests."
