A MUM from Evesham is calling for Aldi to reverse cutting back on its vegan range available during Veganuary.

The annual campaign to promote veganism runs throughout January each year with more than a million people in 192 countries reportedly inspired to try the lifestyle change since 2014.

Aldi’s own website has an active page dedicated to the event, stating more than “400,000 people signed up for Veganuary for a variety of reasons” and that the budget supermarket could help customers “save 35 per cent” on making the switch.

It reads: “We’ll show you how easy it is to make a plant-based diet tasty and exciting – and with so many vegan options available at Aldi, you can even do it on a budget!”

The Veganuary website estimates some 1,200 new products and menus have been introduced by this year but Laura Deacon says the supermarket’s support of the venture has proved short lived.

“My partner has been vegan for 18 months and since Christmas I have decided to join him,” she said.

“Veganuary made it a lot easier with a lot of products to choose from and Aldi having cheaper options, it made it perfect.

“We really started to like some of the things and planned some of the things into our everyday meals but when we went in recently, they had filled the fridge with juices.

“We asked where they had moved the stock to, my partner was told they wouldn’t be getting it in anymore and that Veganuary was done.

“They said there would be bits in the freezer section and odd bits around the shop but that they would not bother ordering in the same way.

“It seems odd that they would provide a proper range with many people taking on a new lifestyle. It is not like Valentine’s Day or Easter but they don’t seem to see the need for it anymore.

“If I am going out to shop, particularly at the moment when you are only meant to be making essential trips, I want to know I can get what I need in one place.”

An Aldi spokesperson confirmed the Veganuary range had been put together for a limited period only but said that existing vegan products remain on sale with others sometimes available as part of Specialbuys ranges.
