A Tesco worker who battled cancer has been awarded for years of charity work.

Trish Johnson, who works at the supermarket in Evesham, was nominated by her colleagues after taking part in the annual Race for Life event.

Now, she has been presented with the Proud in Pink prize at the Tesco Race for Life Hero Awards.

Trish lost her leg through cancer but has taken part in the fundraising event for a number of years, earning thousands for charity.

She has dedicated many hours of her own time raising money for both Race for Life and Cancer Research UK.

Jason Tarry, UK/ROI CEO at Tesco said: ““Hearing Trish’s story is remarkable, and she is an inspiration to all of our colleagues at Tesco.

“She has always encouraged her team to get involved and take part. We’re happy to reward this level of passion for positivity and commitment for fundraising.”

During lockdown, Trish raised £1,000 for the charities through raffles, bottle decorating and competitions in store.

Trish’s award comes as Tesco and Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life celebrate 20 years in partnership, having raised over £60 million since 2002.

The Hero Awards have been introduced to mark the occasion with just nine Tesco employees recognised nationwide.

Mr Tarry added: “Celebrating 20 years of partnership with Cancer Research UK and Race for Life is a momentous occasion for everyone at Tesco.

“More than 400,000 colleagues and customers have taken part in Race for Life events and we hope it can continue for many more years to come.

“We’re so proud of the work that colleagues, customers and suppliers have done throughout the partnership to make it a success. Together, we will make a difference in the fight against cancer.”

Michelle Mitchell, the charity’s chief executive, said: “We’re thrilled to be celebrating this partnership milestone with Tesco.

“The success of our partnership over the last 20 years has been thanks to the support Tesco colleagues, customers and suppliers have given Race for Life, and we want to say a huge thank you to them for their unwavering dedication and commitment.

“All the money raised will help fund vital research to save more lives, and we hope everyone feels incredibly proud of this achievement.”
