A local MP has called for villages on the A46 to help develop an action plan to improve safety.

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin wants residents to share their ideas ahead of a formal review of the road, which has been the scene of numerous fatal crashes in recent years.

The most recent incident came at the beginning of November when a man in his 50s was killed following a collision with a lorry.

Mrs Baldwin visited the busy road and discussed concerns with Worcestershire County Councillor Elizabeth Eyre, Sue Morris from Sedgeberrow Parish Council and Karen Rowley from Ashton under Hill Parish Council.

Following the discussion, she said: “I know the A46 very well and fully understand the problems that local people have turning onto and across this very busy main road.

“National Highways and the local police are going to look into this matter, but it is essential that in parallel, we look for our own short and long term solutions to making this road safer.”

National Highways are investigating concerns raised by not only Mrs Baldwin but also fellow MPs Nigel Huddleston and Laurence Robertson.

She added: “There’s a strategic plan in development to improve the road so I will be keen for the planners to look at including a roundabout in the scheme.

“But the villages have come together to discuss this and have drawn up a series of immediate measures which have improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

“There are a lot of common-sense solutions on the table, and I will hope that National Highways get cracking with their work before another serious accident occurs.”

This comes following campaign work from local resident Lucy Fletcher, who was involved in a crash on the A46 herself in 2015.

A petition set up by Ms Fletcher has now reached almost 6,000 signatures.
