THE efforts of pupils and staff from Bengeworth Academy were central to the book launch of two new books retelling the history of Evesham Abbey.

The books were produced with the authorship of academy teachers Katie Brodie, and Laura Packer who wrote the Key Stage 1 book, and retired engineer, Lawrence Stribling.

The books are uniquely illustrated thanks to professional illustrator Guy Spencer.

Aided by Evesham’s MP Nigel Huddleston, the Minister for Heritage, the pupils opened the sealed boxes of new books last week.

Mr Huddleston said: “In my role as Heritage Minister I am delighted to see the enthusiasm of young people towards our local heritage and Evesham’s history.

“It is so encouraging to see how local schools have worked with the Evesham Abbey Trust and the Almonry Museum to bring the past to life.

“These books which will be presented to our local schools will be a lasting legacy for future generations.”

When completed in 2023, the conserved and preserved abbey site will include a set of interpretive gardens and features to demonstrate the abbey layout and its history.

Copies of both books will be distributed to local schools and the books will also be available on loan from Evesham Library or can be purchased from The Almonry Museum and the Evesham Abbey Trust Hub located in the Riverside shopping centre.

The Evesham Abbey Trust has another exciting event planned which will include a concert, Music From The Abbey, a specially commissioned suite composed by David Cowell to be performed by pupils of the local primary, middle and secondary schools at the Henrician Theatre on April 5 and 6.
