A lorry full of donations is on its way to Romania to support Ukrainian refugees.

The Evesham branch of Teams4u, an international children’s charity, has packed up its first lorry full of humanitarian aid, which set off on Saturday.

Earlier this month the charity celebrated having collected over 15 tonnes, and donations have continued to pour in.

Trustee Paul Jeane said: “We have continued to receive large amounts of aid into our warehouse in Evesham and on Saturday we loaded 26 pallets of aid onto a Romanian lorry which is now on its way to northern Romania to the city of Suceava.

“Part of the University of Suceava in northern Romania is a refugee camp which has direct links with the University of Kyiv.

“Once unloaded the aid will be given out to refugees there and smaller vans will transport aid across the border into Ukraine.”

Donations from local schools, churches, businesses and individuals have flooded the charity’s warehouse on Davies Road.

Speaking earlier this month upon reaching the 15-tonne milestone, Mr Jeanes said: “The response has been overwhelming and shows that although we cannot do anything to affect the political or military situation, we can make a difference to some of those affected

“For me personally, and my wife Alison, we have been involved in the Teams4u Christmas Shoebox appeal for over 20 years and have travelled extensively to eastern Europe, including Ukraine.

“The reason we got involved and especially in this current crisis is to bring a bit of joy and happiness into the lives of those people we see on the TV each evening in the news who through no fault of their own have fled the country or become displaced.”
