Evesham’s MP has backed the Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak after the pair were fined for breaking lockdown rules.

Prime Minister Johnson and Chancellor Sunak will be issued with the fines having breached Covid-19 regulations following allegations of parties during lockdown in Downing Street and Whitheall.

Consequently, Mr Johnson becomes the first serving Prime Minister to have been found to have broken the law.

Despite this, Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston continues to pledge his support for the pair.

He said: “Many people made extraordinary sacrifices during the pandemic and are understandably angry about this matter.

“The Prime Minister and Chancellor have both made sincere apologies - which I accept.

“They have my support because I know that they, and the whole government, are committed to delivering on the priorities of the British people including dealing with the situation in Ukraine, the recovery from the pandemic, and the cost of living.”

Police confirmed that more than 50 referrals for fines had been made off the back of the lockdown parties.

Metropolitan Police say that at least 30 more fixed penalty notices will be issued by the ACRO Criminal Records Office.

This is up from the 20 referrals for fixed-penalty notices (FPN) the force said had been made at the end of March.

Scotland Yard said it was “making every effort to progress this investigation at speed”, with the possibility of more fines to come.

Mr Johnson said it “did not occur” to him that the gaterhing in the Cabinet Room on June 19, 2020, to mark his 56th birthday was a violation of the rules, adding that he “now humbly accepts” that he did.

Speaking to broadcasters at Chequers, the Prime Minister said he “fully respects” the outcome of the police investigation and accepted “in all sincerity that people had the right to expect better” from him.

Labour leader Keir Starmer, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon are among those calling for the Prime Minister to resign.

Carrie Johnson, Mr Johnson’s wife, was also issued with a fine which has been paid.

Meanwhile, Mr Sunak said: “I understand that for figures in public office, the rules must be applied stringently in order to maintain public confidence. I respect the decision that has been made and have paid the fine.”
