It was a successful opening weekend for Evesham’s new ‘first of its kind’ store.

Empty Jars, a zero-waste shop, opened its doors for the first time on Saturday.

Husband and wife owners, Marino Cretu and Maddie Kirby, couldn’t be happier with how the grand opening went.

They said: “Thank you everyone for coming to our launch!

“We had a wonderful day meeting you all - it’s lovely to be part of such a supportive community.”

The shop, at 8 Vine Street, aims to cut down on unnecessary packaging by asking customers to bring their own containers to fill with food, toiletries, cleaning supplies and other products.

Customers are also encouraged to donate any spare bottles or tubs they have for other shoppers to make use of.

Shoppers are asked to weigh their container before filling it, then weight it again after to pay.

Speaking before Saturday’s grand opening, the couple said: “We find as consumers it is so hard to live without plastic and unnecessary waste and believe the best way to really solve this problem, is to prevent waste in the first place

“With our first stock order, we have already saved hundreds of plastic bottles.”

They added that they are hoping to stock as much organic and local produce as possible.

“Our laundry liquid, shampoos, conditioners, washing up liquids, detergents, and cooking oils all come from a circular economy which means that the big tubs from which you can dispense your liquids into your own bottles to take home, go back to our suppliers to be reused again,” they said.

The shop has gone down a treat with customers too.

One shopper, Doreen Nurdern, wrote on Facebook: “Really enjoyed my visit. So impressed. Best of luck.”

Another, Sarah Cohen, wrote: “Wonderful shop - just what Evesham needs!”

Empty Jars will open from Tuesdays to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and from 10am to 4pm on Saturdays.
