THE city's MP has resigned from the government saying he can no longer "in good conscience" serve under Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Worcester MP Robin Walker announced he would be stepping down from his role as schools minister and resigning from the government in a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday (July 6).

The resignation comes after fellow Worcestershire MP and health secretary Sajid Javid announced his resignation from Mr Johnson's cabinet on Tuesday (July 5) alongside Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

The letter said: "I have today offered my resignation from the Government and look forward to supporting Conservatives and campaigning for Worcester from the backbenches, it has been a privilege to work to support our brilliant schools."

The resignation comes as Boris Johnson has been forced into a humiliating apology over his handling of the Chris Pincher row after it emerged he had forgotten about being told of previous allegations of “inappropriate” conduct.

Mr Pincher quit as deputy chief whip last week following claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club, but Mr Johnson was told about allegations against him as far back as 2019.

Boris Johnson admitted “it was a mistake” to give scandal-hit former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher his government role and said: “I apologise for it.”
