Morrisons came out on top as they took on Tesco in a charity football match.

The two Evesham supermarkets battled it out in the 24th edition of the Retail Challenge Cup on Sunday.

In the end, it was the team from Morrisons, off Davies Road, who were victorious, battering their opponents 6-1 at Evesham United Football Club.

The result means both supermarkets have now won 12 titles, making next year’s 25th edition of the cup even more important.

Captain Dan Trotman was presented with the Retail Challenge Cup by Worcestershire County Cricket Club legend Daryl Mitchell.

Dan’s teammate Ollie Price picked up the man of the match award, which was in memory of Tesco worked Shirley Barber.

Local bragging rights were far from the most important aspect of the day however, with the event raising £1,400 for St Richard’s Hospice.

Organiser Mark Payne founded the event in 1998 in memory of his mum, Gill, who was cared for by St Richard’s.

Mr Payne said: “Mum passed away in December 1997 when she was 54, but we are so grateful to the nurses at St Richard’s, they were so caring and helpful.

“It was a difficult time and they were so caring and understanding – they were always there. We are really grateful.”

Since its beginnings, the Retail Challenge Cup has raised around £20,000 for St Richard’s to support patients living with serious progressive illnesses and their families.

Speaking before Sunday’s match, Ria Simons, fundraiser at St Richard’s, said: “This is a well-loved annual event in Evesham and has raised a tremendous amount for St Richard’s over the years.

“It is set to be a great evening, so come along and support a team and the hospice too."
