A DRIVER and passenger had 'a lucky escape' this morning following a crash on the M5 which has caused delays for drivers. 

West Mercia Police shared dramatic photos of the aftermath of the crash on the M5 southbound between junctions 4A and 5 which is expected to cause delays this morning.

Drivers have been advised to find alternative routes where possible after photos showed a plank of wood had smashed a hole through the crashed BMW's front windscreen.

The crash happened around 4.15am this morning with four people at the scene described by the fire service as 'walking wounded' under the care of paramedics. Nobody was trapped in the crash, fire crews have confirmed.

Lane 1 (of 4) was closed on the M5 southbound between J4A (M42) and J5 (Droitwich). However, all lanes have now reopened, National Highways confirmed shortly after 7am. Delays of 15 minutes are still predicted on the approach with 'two miles of congestion'.

Recovery is underway for a vehicle which has left the carriageway. There are delays of at least 15 minutes above usual journey times on the approach.

Drivers have been advised to find alternative routes.

A spokesperson for the Operations Patrol Unit said: 'Don't drive tired! Lucky escape for the two occupants of this vehicle M5 4a - 5. The picture says it all."

 

The photos show heavy front-end damage to the car including a smashed windscreen, crumpled bonnet and both airbags deployed.

 

 

A driver caught up in the traffic said: "It looked like a lorry had collided with a car then gone off the road. There were a lot of police."
