Evesham’s MP has congratulated Beth Mead on becoming BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Mead, the Arsenal and England forward, became the first female footballer to win the award at a glitzy ceremony last night.

She was named player of the tournament at the Women’s Euros in the summer, scoring six goals as England became champions for the first time.

Mr Huddleston, who was sports minister until September, said: “Congratulations Beth Mead on becoming Sports Personality of the Year.

“What a great way for the Lionesses to end the year. Kudos to all those recognised and honoured last night.”

The Lionesses were also named team of the year last night, with boss Sarina Wiegman winning coach of the year.
