AN EXPLOSION at a home in Evesham was not caused by a gas leak an investigation into the incident has found.

Emergency services arrived at Hemingway in Evesham on Tuesday just after 5pm after receiving reports of a suspected gas explosion.

Four people were hurt - one seriously injured - after the explosion destroyed the property.

Wales and West Utilities have confirmed that the explosion was "not related to the mains gas network."

A spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of an explosion at a property in the Hemmingway area of Evesham in Worcestershire last night (27 Dec) and immediately sent a team of engineers to attend.

“On arrival, we found that there had been severe structural damage to the property and the emergency services were in control of the scene. As a precaution, they evacuated neighbouring properties and closed the road.

“Our engineers have carried out a number of gas safety checks and have made sure the area is safe - no gas leaks have been detected on the gas mains in the local area.

The cause of the explosion at the property is still being investigated by the emergency services, however, we can confirm it is not related to the mains gas network.”

Hereford and Worcester's Fire Investigation team are at the site today (Thursday), alongside station commanders James Holder and Neil Lilwall, West Mercia Police and the Health and Safety Executive.

A spokesperson for the Fire Investigation team said: "Our empathy goes out to the casualties and the community following this devastating event."

One man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and two other adults were taken to the Hereford County Hospital to be treated.

However, the three people did not suffer life-threatening injuries and have been discharged from the hospital since the explosion.

The building suffered extensive damage and the police evacuated ten neighbouring homes.

The gas supply was also cut off from 35 homes for the safety of the residents.
