THE PERSON airlifted to hospital for burns treatment following a gas explosion near Pershore was a man in his 40s.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service were called to a caravan fire in Eckington following an explosion on Friday, April 7.

A spokesperson for the caravan site said the incident was isolated to one caravan, and they believed it was a gas oven that had exploded.

An Evesham fire crew attended the incident at 2.15pm and found the fire was out on arrival.

A spokesperson said: "“Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service were called out at 2.15pm on Friday, April 7 to a caravan fire at a caravan park in Eckington following an explosion.

“Crews from Evesham and Worcester Fire Stations attended the scene with the fire out on arrival and an inspection of the area was carried out using a thermal imaging camera.

“One man in his 40s was left in the care of the air ambulance. The police were also in attendance.

“The incident status was marked as pending closure for HWFRS at 4.31pm. HWFRS carried out a fire investigation and determined the cause was down to a gas leak.”

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said that the injuries the man sustained were "potentially serious".

They said: "We were called to reports of an explosion at a caravan site on Pershore Road at 2.17pm on Friday.

"One ambulance, a paramedic officer, the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham by air ambulance."
