A BAKED potato shop has found a new home.

The Spud Man is leaving the Riverside Shopping Centre after 33 years.

Set up by Mick Bowen in 1989, the lunch cafe will soon be moving to Market Square.

Mr Bowen, now 61, said: “I opened in Riverside Shopping Centre in 1989, serving traditional baked potatoes and our famous hot roast pork baps with all the trimmings.

“Thirty-three years later we’re proud to still be seeing our original customers and their own children and grandchildren!”

Mr Bowen runs the shop alongside his son Tom Bowen, 33.

The Bowens are in the process of updating the old Gateway Tearooms, a grade II listed building in Market Place.

When open, aiming for some time in July, it will be under a new name, Ye Olde Baked Potato Shoppe.

Revealing more of what customers can expect, Mr Bowen added: “We intend to continue predominantly as a takeaway, offering a few tables and chairs, maintaining our identity and values.

“We are The Spud Men.

“In addition to our existing menu we will offer new exciting jacket toppings, homemade cakes and hot drinks to take away and Bennett’s Farm soft scoop ice cream.

“As well as takeaway, we will have a beautiful back-room seating area which will be available to hire for meetings and events.”

Mr Bowen added: “Here’s to the next 33 years.

“Dexter my two-year-old grandson has his ‘New Potato’ apron ironed and ready to go!”
