A SCHOOL has been "locked down" as police chased a suspected burglar.

Students at Bengeworth Academy went into lockdown after a burglary suspect entered the school grounds.

The man had been running from police and was looking for a hiding place or escape route.

He was later found by officers in a nearby caravan park and arrested.

Police have assured parents that staff and pupils were not put at risk, and the school has now "returned to normality".

A spokesperson for Evesham Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "There has been a large police presence around Burford Rd, and Bengeworth Academy, Evesham this morning.

"Police were looking for a wanted male who had committed a recent burglary.

"The suspect had gained access to Bengeworth Academy School grounds having run from Police, the School followed their lockdown policy as a result.

"At no point were the staff or pupils at risk, the suspect was looking for a hiding place/ escape route, however, he has now been arrested following officers locating him in the adjacent caravan park.

"Thank you to Bengeworth Academy and the public for your assistance.

"The School has returned to normality following this incident, and the head teacher updated."
