A RAINBOW flag has gone up in Evesham, just days before the end of Pride Month.

Evesham Town Council is now flying a rainbow flag, which reflects the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community.

However, June, which is Pride Month, is almost over, meaning the flag will stay up for just a matter of days.

The council said it was due to issues purchasing a rainbow flag in time.

A spokesperson said: “We know that Pride Month is June and therefore we're a bit late with this running into July.

“But we didn't have a rainbow flag in time to do it at the start of the month.

“The Pride flag isn’t a stock item from our supplier and it took some time to reach us.

“Last week we flew the Armed Forces flag and on Monday we flew the Union flag at half-mast in memory of district councillor Ed Cohen who recently passed away.

“We then were able to fly the Pride flag in time for the end of Pride Month.

“Next year we'll aim to fly it at the start of June, at the same time as the district and county councils.”

The rainbow flag will fly until next Monday, July 3.

It is just one of several new flags purchased by the Town Council following the installation of the flagpole outside the Almonry.

At a meeting held in April, councillor Robert Raphael proposed that they fly, and purchase if necessary, the flag of St George, the Welsh flag, the flag of St Andrew, the Commonwealth flag, the flag representing Armed Forces Day, and the Pride flag.

The proposal was seconded by councillor Sarah Schaathun

Councillor Tim Haines proposed an amendment calling for the rainbow flag to be excluded.

However, a vote was held on this amendment, and it was ultimately rejected.

Councillor Haines has been contacted for a comment on this matter.
