AN event set to put the ‘market’ back into a historic market town is just around the corner.

Organisers are excited for the return of the Shipston Food Festival this year, following a lengthy period away.

Stour Valley Lions, a group aimed at supporting the community, has brought back the town's market to celebrate its history.

Sue Bains, Lions’ treasurer, said: "Coming off the Fosse Way are signs to Shipston-on-Stour Historic Market Town, and you could be forgiven for assuming you will be able to visit a market.

"But no. Shipston has a beautiful town centre with a Market Square... but no market!

"We want this to change.

"For one day, we are bringing a market to Shipston."

The event will take place on Sunday, September 10, between 10am to 4pm.

Visitors will be able to browse across stalls selling products ranging from fruit, veg and meat to delicatessen and bakery products to ready-to-eat savouries and sweets.

"We've even included goodies for your pets - there's something for everyone," she added.

"With support from the “Covid Recovery Fund” from Stratford on Avon District Council and generous sponsorship from local shops helping us to set up the Food Festival, we are looking to attract as many visitors as possible to help us raise money for local causes.

"As with all Lion’s events, all profits go to charity.

"It's going to be a great day for Shipston! See you there!"

The festival used to be an annual event until 2017, when it became "increasingly difficult," and then Covid caused another pause.

However, this year, the Stour Valley Lions received an Event Support Grant from Stratford Town Council, which has enabled them to revive the market.

So far, around 30 stalls have been booked, offering a wide range of produce and catering choices.

The event aims to celebrate the produce quality in and around Shipston.
