MORE than a hundred residents from across The Vale gathered for a "joyous" cultural celebration.

The Indian Kerala community within the Vale of Evesham gathered to celebrate Onam - a regional festival symbolising happiness and prosperity.

Onam is the biggest festival in the Indian state of Kerala, and on September 2, the festivities were brought to Offenham Village Hall.

The eight-hour festivities involved eating traditional food and partaking in cultural activities.

The attendees added a colourful touch to the celebration by donning their traditional attire.

The ladies adorned sarees, while the gentlemen sported Dothi with shirts to create a scene of cultural unity.

A unique aspect of this year's celebration included classes on British culture, traditions, and adaptation for the community's new arrivals to the UK.

British citizens, with Kerala roots, shared their insights, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding among the community members.

Evesham resident Amal Palakkan said: "The highlight of the event was the traditional "sadhya" meal, featuring a sumptuous spread of rice and 23 different vegetarian curries and sides.

"It was a feast of flavours that brought the community closer together."

As well as the culinary delights, the programme featured a rich tapestry of cultural performances, including the graceful 'thiruvathira' dance and classical dance forms.

Both children and adults participated, showing off their talents and traditions.

Mr Palakkan added: "The festivities lasted for a memorable eight hours, leaving everyone with cherished memories and a deeper connection to their heritage and new home.

"The Onam celebration was a resounding success, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of Evesham's Indian Kerala community."

It falls during the Malayali month of Chingam (August to September) and marks the homecoming of legendary King Mahabali.

The harvest festival signifies the return of King Mahabali/Maveli to his beloved state, Kerala and every year, those from the state celebrate their king's homecoming.
