AN Evesham police inspector was left feeling on top of the world after reaching the top of a mountain in Nepal.

Peter Andrews climbed 21,247ft to the summit of Mera Peak in the Himalayan Sagarmatha region of the country.

The 52-year-old from Evesham completed the 22-day challenge last month and raised more than £5,200 for SCOPE, the charity for people with Cerebral Palsy.

Peter, who is based at Worcester Police Station, said: “Like a lot of people I have been inspired by the great mountaineers and I suppose I have always wanted to emulate their achievements. Climbing Mera Peak is the nearest I will ever get to climbing a really significant mountain.

“This was a very physically demanding expedition of which 17 nights were spent in hike tents mostly in sub-zero temperatures. The glacier leading to the summit was very challenging with numerous deep crevasses. Of the 14 expedition members who set out to reach the summit, ten did so successfully.

“To finally reach the summit of Mera Peak this year has given me immense satisfaction. The view from the summit of several of the highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest, was truly amazing and memorable.”

This is the third year Peter has raised funds for SCOPE. Two years ago he climbed Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the total he has raised on behalf of SCOPE over the last three years now stands at almost £18,000. Peter paid all of his own expenses.
