The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has responded to the parliamentary defeat of the Meaningful Vote on the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration.

Dr Adam Marshall, director general of the BCC, said: “There are no more words to describe the frustration, impatience, and growing anger amongst business after two and a half years on a high-stakes political rollercoaster ride that shows no sign of stopping.

"Basic questions on real-world operational issues remain unanswered, and firms now find themselves facing the unwelcome prospect of a messy and disorderly exit from the EU on Friday, March 29.”

The priority for government and parliament must now be to avoid the clear danger that a “no deal” Brexit would pose to businesses and communities across Worcestershire, Herefordshire and the UK. No deal plans for some businesses are too little, too late and companies urgently need clarity and certainty – particularly on future relationships on trade.

MP's backing for Brexit deal

We are already speaking to Members who are feeling the pressure of the ongoing turmoil, many of who are now activating contingency plans and halting investments as they anticipate a future that is no clearer now than it was at the time of the referendum result.

For companies immediately needing planning advice, there are limited places remaining on our Brexit Planning: Reviewing the Supply Chain Impact course on Friday, February 1, from 9.30am-4.30pm.

The time critical course helps businesses prepare for all possible scenarios and is delivered by Strong & Herd LLP. To find out more information and to book your place, please contact Emma Hopkins on EmmaH@hwchamber.co.uk.

I would like to encourage concerned businesses to contact our policy department for up-to-date support and guidance ahead of further parliamentary discussions on policy@hwchamber.co.uk
