THE death of a popular village cricketer who collapsed during a match on Saturday will be a “massive loss” say family and friends.
Matthew ‘Spike’ Walters, aged 45, died suddenly while batting during Saturday afternoon’s game at Great Alne, where his team were playing Earlswood.
Cricket club officials said ‘Spike’ had been a stalwart of the club for many years. At the time of his death he was the Saturday vicecaptain.
Mr Walters started playing for Great Alne in 1982. He also lived in the village near Alcester. He leaves a wife, Alison, and three young children.
A statement released by the club said: “He was partially responsible for helping the club to be the first in Warwickshire to attain Sport England Club Mark Status.
“More recently his time and energy have been spent furthering the youth coaching. A player with such passion for the game, he will be a massive loss.”
