University of Worcester Graduations - Friday, November 9, 2018
HONORARY - Marieanne Spacey-Cale MBE
A former England women’s football player and coach is to be doubly honoured by the University of Worcester today.
Marieanne Spacey-Cale MBE is a top-class domestic and international footballer, Club Manager, International Coach and a UEFA Coach Educator.
Today she not only graduates with a Master’s Degree in Sports Coaching Science from the University of Worcester, but is also receiving an Honorary Doctorate from the University.
Marieanne made her debut for England against Belgium in 1984. She played in all four of England's games at their first FIFA Women's World Cup appearance in 1995. Having finished playing for England with a respectable 76 appearances, Marieanne was later recalled in 1999 as part of the Squad for the UEFA European Championship qualifying and Finals campaign in 2001, announcing her International retirement after the championships, having played a total of 91 times, scoring 28 goals.
In November 2006 she was appointed girls and women's football development officer for Worcestershire FA.
In December 2013 Marieanne was appointed assistant coach for the England women's team and was part of the coaching team that won a bronze medal in the 2015 World Cup in Canada. Alongside her assistant role, she took responsibility for the England women's national under-23 football team, and the development of female coaches in England.
In 2009 Marieanne was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame, and then, in 2016 was awarded an MBE for services to Women’s Football. Also in 2016, Marieanne became one of only 8 other women coaches to hold the UEFA Pro Licence, which she achieved whilst also studying for her Master’s.
Earlier this year, Marieanne took up the role of Head of Girls and Women’s Football/Head Coach at Southampton FC.
FELLOW - Stephen Edwards
Stephen Edwards, the co-founder of the Charity CG5, which was set up to support the involvement and progression of young and disabled people in sport, will become a Fellow of the University of Worcester today.
Since CG5 began, it has helped over 50 individuals under the age of 21 from the Herefordshire and Worcestershire area. Several awardees have studied at the University of Worcester, whilst also participating in their chosen sport.
Stephen, who is a member of the Worcestershire Ambassadors and a Freemason, has personally sponsored several young athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds and mentored ex young offenders. His company, Spirit Executive, has been sponsors of the Worcester Wolves Junior Academy and he has strategically advised on several player development and fundraising initiatives with over 60 youngsters benefitting.
For the past two years Stephen has been a leading supporter and fundraiser for the University’s Charity of the year, Smile for Joel, as well as raising funds for many other charities, including Midlands Air Ambulance and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
HONORARY - Jessica Kellgren-Fozard
Presenter, blogger and YouTuber, Jessica Kellgren-Fozard, will receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Worcester today.
Jessica first came into the public eye on the BBC reality TV show, Britain’s Missing Top Model, about models with disabilities.
Across a variety of social media channels she writes and vlogs about a mixture of accessibility issues, gay culture, deafness, beauty, vintage fashion and a love of old Hollywood glamour.
Her YouTube channel has over 225,000 subscribers and she has worked with BBC Radio 1 and BBC Three to create online content.
In 2017, she was invited by the Fabian Society to speak on a Panel at the Labour Conference about the need to create a Policy that could lead to a fairer society for disabled people in the UK.
She has taught herself a form of Sign Language known as Sign Supported English (SSE), using books and the YouTube to help her. On her TV Show, Quintessentially Jessica, Jessica uses an interactive approach to teach others how to master British Sign Language.
STUDENT - Roshel Morrison
A student from New York - who completed an online degree in Business Administration with the University of Worcester – is visiting the Faithful City for the first time this week for her graduation ceremony.
Roshel Morrison, 28, originally from Kingston, Jamaica, completed her BA (Hons) in Business Administration from a variety of overseas destinations using the University’s remote learning platform.
“My aim was to get an international education from a top university in the UK that had a comprehensive programme and concentration in Business, and ultimately I chose the University of Worcester,” Roshel said. “The online system made me
feel part of a global community. You can talk to peers from all over the world, which in turn creates a family environment that fosters friendship and cultural understanding.”
“The greatest benefit to studying online was being able to sign in for class from anywhere in the world,” Roshel added, “Once, whilst on vacation, I even signed in for class from the beach.”
Having secured her degree, Roshel now works in the airline industry and she plans to return to Worcester, in cyber-space at least, to complete an online Masters in Business.
“My aim is to become a Customs and Border Protection Officer,” she said. “Obtaining this degree will enable me to sustain growth in my career, and I even hope to return to the University of Worcester for an online Master’s degree next year.
The learning environment at Worcester certainly makes me want to go higher in my studies.”
“There is a quote from Malcolm X that my mother always instilled in me about how education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today, and for me, Worcester is the vehicle to take you there.”
STUDENT - Kristina Cartwright-Riley
A sports student with a passion for helping others graduates from the University of Worcester today with First Class Honours.
Kristina Cartwright-Riley juggled her studies with delivering weekly walking netball sessions for over 60s in the community, as well as volunteering with The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, having herself being diagnosed with leukaemia as a child.
“When I left secondary school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so took a year out,” said the 22-year-old. “I hadn’t done PE at GCSE or A-level but spent a large amount of time playing, coaching, officiating and running sports during my time at school, and throughout my year out I realised that sport was what I enjoyed doing and I was good at organising things.”
Kristina, from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, joined the University’s Sports Development and Coaching degree and went from strength to strength in her studies, achieving an Academic Scholarship Award for earning eight A grades in her second year of study, as well as being awarded The Keith Stokes-Smith Award for Outstanding Achievement within the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science.
“My course built my passion of using sport to change people lives and in the future, I hope that I will be able to facilitate other people’s passion for sport,” she said. “I am not driven by the monetary value of a job but my desire to
be able to do good and help other people, thus I hope in the future I am doing something that makes me and other people happy, preferably in sport and maybe overseas.”
Talking about graduation, Kristina, whose mother is currently being treated for cancer, said: “After mum’s illness I’m just really happy and thankful that she will be there to watch me graduate. The final year at university has been really difficult with everything going on, but I am really excited to be able to celebrate what I achieved with my family and friends.”
