A BERROWS Worcester Journal dated back to 1937 has been mysteriously found in a property.

Anna Hocking, from Worcester, was having an extension put on her house when the building firm, Bespoke Buildings and Landscapes, discovered a front page to an old newspaper underneath the floor boards. In addition to the front page, four cigarette packets were also retrieved. Mrs Hocking said each packet was found in a different room of the house. She believes a previous tenant has deliberately left these belongings to be later discovered.

She said: "We were amazed with the discovery. It is our little treasure and history of the house."

The newspaper, priced at one pence, has been pressed gently using an iron in which the family will frame as a memento. They are hoping to replace the objects found with their own symbolic value for a future tenant to find.

Mrs Hocking added: "It would be nice to think if someone is doing something to the house in years to come they will find some historic object of who the house used to belong to. It would be lovely for a future family to find a time capsule of previous tenants who lived here.

"I have found it fascinating reading the articles. Some of the stories in the paper were international, which is strange when you compare stories of the Worcester News today and the fact they are all local.

"Worcester has always mentioned it has one of the oldest establishing newspapers and here you can fully appreciate its worth.

"The first thing I noticed was font style, it truly reflects the age of the paper."

The family have been at their home for eight years and have been unsure on how old the the property is.

Mrs Hocking said: "There has always been uncertainty regarding how old the house is. This newspaper has confirmed it is a 1930’s property."
