PRIMARY schools in and around Worcester are celebrating after scoring well in the latest league tables.

In 2018, a school is above the floor if at least 65 per cent of pupils meet the expected standard in reading, writing and maths at key stage 2, or if it achieves “sufficient progress scores” in all three subjects.

St George’s Catholic Primary School in Barbourne has 89 per cent of pupils reaching the expected standard, the highest in the city, as well as racking up well above average scores on reading, writing and maths.

Head Gill Gittins said: “”We’re extremely pleased with this fantastic result. The hard work of the children and the staff, and the very supportive parents: all these factors have contributed to this wonderful result.”

During the summer, the school also had a glowing Ofsted report, which noted that “at the end of KS 2, pupils’ progress in writing and mathematics was significantly above average and in the highest ten per cent in the country.”

Further afield, Cradley CE Primary, near Malvern, scored 93 per cent, to the delight of the head Adam Greaves.

He said: “We’re very pleased with the result, which reflects a whole school team effort.

“As a school, we are more than league table results, but nonetheless, this figure is very gratifying.

“I’m really proud of the staff, the kids and the whole school community.”

The school also rated well above average for reading and writing.

“Our scores in that area are phenomenally high, which is down to fantastic teaching all the way through the school.”

Honeybourne Primary Academy was another high scorer, with 80 per cent of pupils meeting the expected standard.

Head Elaine Huntington said: “We’re very happy with the result. It’s worth pointing out that this is not just an accolade for the year six teacher, but for the whole team all the way through.

“We have high expectations of our pupils, both academically and in their behaviour, and it’s important that we see them as whole children.

“It’s because of this that were are able to achieve such good results.”

The floor standard is the minimum standard for pupil attainment and progress that the Government expects schools to meet, and schools need to meet either the attainment element or all three of the progress elements.
