KIDDERMINSTER town council is looking for someone who can command a crowd and out-shout the wind to be its next town crier.

The council is welcoming applications for its town crier position, responsible for announcing public and royal notifications, as well as proclamation duties.

A town crier has been appointed by the town's corporation for around 350 years, although the role is thought to have been part of Kidderminster's heritage since the 12th century.

Mayor of Kidderminster Martin Stooke said: "Kidderminster has a long history of having a town crier.

"The previous crier, Jim Pearman, retired last year after long and impressive service to the town.

"We are now looking to fill this important position with a confident and affable candidate, who will announce important news and continue to promote Kidderminster and its heritage.”

This is an unpaid position, although agreed expenses can be claimed, as well as a £500 annual honorarium.

The successful applicant will be expected to attend pre-arranged events and follow simple council guidelines and protocols.

A town crier uniform will be provided.
